So, you’ve mastered Facebook, conquered Instagram, and even freshened up your Google Business Profile. But what about TikTok?

If you’re like many business owners, you’ve probably been curious about how to use TikTok to help promote your offerings. You may even have a personal TikTok account that you use for fun. When it comes to TikTok for businesses, however, there are a few things entrepreneurs should keep in mind before creating a new account.

1 | You can’t set it and forget it

Like any social media platform, TikTok necessitates regular posting for it to be most effective. This could be as little as once a week or more often, such as once a day, but the key here is consistency. Posting once and then forgetting about the account for a month will get you nowhere and could even signal to platform users that you may not be open or up to date on the digital side of things. If you start an account, make sure you can commit to regular posting from the start.

2 | It doesn’t have to be perfect

While Instagram may be the place for more aesthetically perfect posts, TikTok is often thought of as the more natural, fun platform. Because of this, business owners can lean into creativity when planning out video content…or they can take it on the fly as “video-worthy” moments pop up. For someone who owns a coffee shop, this could be as simple as showing a barista craft a latte. For an entrepreneur, a “day in the life” video could be a great way to hook viewers. The main idea here is to work with what you have on the content side and figure out fun ways to spin it.

3 | Pay attention to trends

Of all the main social platforms, TikTok is most heavily reliant upon trends. With this in mind, it’s important to pay attention to everything from trending audio to video concepts and hashtags. Being an early player in a trending space makes it much easier to go viral and get more eyeballs on your content. You don’t have to tap into every trend, of course, but be sure to keep an eye out for ones that could be relevant to your business.

4 | Use editing apps

We mentioned that TikTok content doesn’t need to be perfect — and we stand by that! — but we’ll also say that a little bit of editing can go a long way. TikTok has great built-in editing tools, and third-party apps like Canva, CapCut and InShot all offer similar capabilities. Plus, once you get a feel for the editing style you like, it becomes much easier to cut together videos in the future.

5 | Fill out your profile

As with any social platform, your presence is only as good as you make it. Along with regular posting, make it a point to fill out your profile so it’s as comprehensive as possible. Add a name, address, email, and anything else relevant to your business. If you have enough followers and can add a link to your profile, do that! The better your profile looks, the more attractive and professional it will appear to users who visit your page.
